After discovering their parents are super-villains in disguise, a group of teenagers band together to run away from their homes in order to atone for their parents' actions and to discover the secrets of their origins.
Follows a group of six teenagers in the Marvel universe - Nico Minoru, Karolina Dean, Molly Hernandez, Chase Stein, Alex Wilder, and Gertrude Yorkes - who discover that their parents are secretly members of a super-villain cabal called The Pride. After deciding they're no longer safe in their own homes, the kids go on the run. In the midst of hiding from their elders, the teens learn about themselves and become a family of their own.
Okay, so I'm a big fan of Marvel, have been for years. I heard of this show on facebook and because hey James Marsters was going to be in it and thought "Awesome!" and I watched the preview and I thought this was going to be so cool, and I thought wrong. I only watched half of the premiere because honestly it was tiring, depressing, boring, nothing happening whatsoever. An hour in, when something finally did happen, it was the scene I had already seen in the preview so it was no big shocker.
I get it's supposed to be a drama, but for the love of God, would it kill someone to crack a joke? Say anything to make me enjoy the grieving yawn fest? We enter the show into these characters lives where they're all dealing with some kind of issue that's not really explained, we see moping and absolutely nothing happening. There's a little hint of mystery, but not enough to make me stick around... and just man, it's so darn serious, smile already. It really doesn't make a good first impression and probably, judging by the amount of iffy reviews on here, doesn't make a good last impression either. I'd say don't waste your time, it's not what it appears to be and it feels very poorly made too.
And to quote my favourite director with some advice they should take, "Make it dark, make it grim, make it tough, but then, for the love of God, tell a joke." -Joss Whedon After finishing 'Runaways,' I come away from it wishing it had instead been an excellent miniseries (which it had potential for), rather than the set-up for a show with multiple seasons. The finale, especially, left a lot to be desired, namely unanswered questions (for viewers without comic knowledge) about Karolina, about Gert's telepathic link with "Lace," about Molly, etc. And much of the drama in the show--instead of being propelled by (in this case, stereotypical) adolescence--could've been propelled by the story around the teens' unique abilities/circumstances. There isn't enough focus on how each teen's abilities can or should play into the bigger picture. Or, how each one could individually help drive the overall story forward.
Marvel does much better work with contained story arcs than cliffhangers, and 'Runaways' is no exception. The much anticipated film adaptation of Marvel Comics 'Runaways' is now in the pre-production stages and auditions for the project's stars is underway. The casting directors are currently conducting a national online open casting call for boys and girls to star in the film.
